Between 2005 and 2009, nearly one in five deaths in the United States were linked to tobacco use. Out of the nearly 480,000 deaths from smoking during those years, 42,000 of those deaths were caused by secondhand smoke. While the use of tobacco has declined some, it still poses a big threat.
·Alcohol
Excessive drinking and engaging in drunk driving are among the main reasons why alcohol is considered a dangerous drug. Not only that, but alcohol also causes aggression and unstable moods. According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, alcohol played a role in 40% of violent crimes reported.
·Prescription painkillers
Painkiller abuse has risen considerably within the past 10 years or so. A common misconception in the world is that if it is prescribed to you, it is not dangerous. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. Prescription painkillers are extremely addictive. When an individual continuously uses prescription painkillers, the body and mind develop a dependence to the substance. It will then require more of the substance in order to function properly. This is when addiction comes into play.
Law enforcement has been cracking down on "pill mills," and laws have been passed to make the prescription laws strict in regards to doctors prescribing painkillers.
